Mermaid Deep
2021
Acrylic ink & oil pastel on archival paper
9"x12"
I painted this Mermaid in the midst of an intense storm that lasted 5 days straight in Vancouver. In sailor folklore, the mermaid’s conflicting personalities as both beautiful and seductive and a monstrous sea creature that drags sailors to their deaths represents the wild and violent but fascinating nature of the sea. In this picture, the mermaid is a prickly and tough female creature with fangs and sharp appendages holding a body by the neck in her tail. In comparison with past fables, rather than vilify her, we may question now whether she has just cause for this murder.
