The Cypress tree has a long and complex history of symbolism. In Europe and the Middle East it is a symbol of mourning, death and the underworld and in Asia, it is seen as divine and is planted outside Buddhist temples. In Greek Mythology, the Cypress tree is associated with Hecate, the goddess of magic, crossroads and the underworld. In ancient Athens, she was worshipped as a protector of the household. In post-Christian writings, she was regarded with rulership over earth, sea, and sky, as well as a more universal role as Savior, Mother of Angels and the Cosmic World Soul. With this piece, I was thinking of the life of women, the womb, monthly death and renewal, our natural connection to the moon and tides and our strength and resilience in the face of pain.
